Cooling water –
ideal conditions for
bacteria
Cooling water temperature is usually considerably higher than 25 °C. A great number of nutrients
enter the water through contact with dust and pollen from the air, as well as through contact with
parts within in the cooling system. The elevated temperature and the supply of adequate nutrients
provide the optimum conditions for the growth of bacteria and other micro-organisms (e.g. algae).
Consequently, they proliferate exponentially and form unwanted biofilms.
Hygiene is crucial
It is imperative to prevent microbial contamination of the
cooling water, since this condition can poses a severe threat
to human health and impair the efficiency of the cooling
system.
Hazard to humans
When the cooling water is in contact with air, fine water
droplets (aerosol) are formed, which are released into the
surroundings of the cooling tower. If this vapour is infested
with bacteria (e.g. Legionella), inhalation by humans may
cause serious diseases such as pneumonia.
Affecting the efficiency of the cooling system
Bacteria and other micro-organisms deposit on surfaces in
the cooling system and form a biofilm. Such biofilms can

exchanger and the cooling tower. This loss of heat transfer is

significantly greater than that due to calcification. Moreover,
the biofilm provides protection for bacteria so that they can
proliferate and contaminate the whole system within a short
period of time. 1 mm

through the following key features: regard to economic, technical and hygienic specifications at
www.gohl.de/info@gohl.de.
Low-maintenance design
Costs are considerably reduced by the fact that internal
structures are easy to maintain and clean and, furthermore,
samples for hygienic monitoring can be taken with no effort.
Minimal exposure to light
The closed design makes sure that the interior of the cooling
tower is exposed to very little light which helps to reduce
biological contamination (green algae).
Selection of suitable materials
The surfaces and materials used have been tested according
to the DIN EN ISO 846 test method and certified as non-
metabolisable.

Hycleen Industrial
100% cooling performance
and environmentally friendly
With Hycleen Industrial we have developed an efficient disinfection solution to secure hygienic
conditions in the cooling water in the long run - without using hazardous chemicals and without
harming the environment.
The Hycleen Des 30 disinfection unit is at the heart of the system. The combination of sophisticated process measuring and
control technology one hand one and real-time hygiene monitoring on the others makes sure that Hycleen Industrial meets the
highest requirements.
1 Hycleen Des 30 Environmentally friendly disinfection system
Hycleen Des 30 is a device for the on-site generation of a highly
active disinfectant which completely destroys germs thanks to its
strong oxidizing power.
• Bacteria do not stand a chance to develop any resistance
• Diaphragm-electrolysis technology
• Disinfectant generated from high-purity salt and softened
water
2 Measuring and control Turn-key solution
The process measuring and control technology takes care of the
intelligent dosing of disinfectant and monitors the cooling water
quality.
• Cutting-edge sensor technology with controller
• Reliable dosing pumps
• Optional remote monitoring and data logger
3 Hycleen EWS Real time hygiene monitoring
The Hycleen EWS measuring device monitors the hygienic
condition in the cooling tower. Trends are detected immediately,
enabling the operator to react at an early stage.
• Real-time analysis within 15 minutes
• Easy implementation
• Optimization of disinfection parameters

The on-site generation of the disinfectant without dangerous chemicals involved is sustainable, environmentally friendly
and energy efficient. In combination with hygiene monitoring, the volume of disinfectant can be reduced to a minimum.
Cooling water is conventionally disinfected by randomly dosing the cooling water with large amounts of harmful biocides.
These biocides are expensive, dangerous in handling and harmful to the environment. Besides, the Hazardous Substances
Ordinance requires operators to check whether the use of less hazardous substances or solutions is possible.

Reference project in Singen
In collaboration with E. W. GOHL GmbH, the Hycleen Industrial disinfection solution was tested
at Georg Fischer Automotive in Singen. The components of the Hycleen Industrial disinfection
solution were installed in the cooling system and successfully applied in a long-term test.
Starting position
Georg Fischer Automotive in Singen manufactures
automotive components. Excess heat from the production is
discharged through wet cooling towers made by E. W. GOHL
GmbH . The cooling system has a cooling capacity of 15 MW
and is operated all year-round. Hygienic conditions in the
cooling water used to be largely ensured through the use of
considerable amounts of costly and hazardous chemicals.
The shock dosage applied had only short-lived disinfecting
effects and resulted in a rapid recontamination of the system.
The Hycleen Industrial disinfection solution has been applied
to ensure a long-term optimization of hygienic conditions in
the cooling water.
Result
Thanks to the use of the Hycleen Industrial solution, hygienic
conditions in the cooling system could be maintained at all
times, even during the critical summer months. Any
proliferation of bacteria, biofilms and algae was stopped
sustainably. Avoiding the use of 1,600 kilograms of biocides
has reduced operating costs substantially and protected the
environment from harm.
