Page 1:AREAPRODUCT BOOKDESIGN APPROACH‘Tangible User Interface‘ describes a sensible interface between analogue operationand digital effects. This approach both fascinates and inspires Matthias Pinkert, the chiefproduct designer at dreipuls GmbH. He completed his apprenticeship in cabinetmakingin his home town of Dresden at the ‘Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau’, a company that hasgained fame around the world for its sophisticated, unique interior decorating designs.Over the course of a decade with this employer, he developed extraordinary powers ofcreativity and an eye for irresistible perfection in design. After his master’s examinations, hestudied product design at Dresden University of Applied Sciences. Even before graduatingfrom university, he attracted attention with some of his initial designs for intuitive products. His innovative lighting concept combining state-of the-art lamps with elegantly reduceddesign silhouettes earned Matthias Pinkert the Red Dot Design Award in 2010. His fascina-tion with the surprisingly logical approach towards using light has triggered a highly conta-gious enthusiasm for such products. What is intuition? Instantaneous comprehension probably describes it best. Sensed knowl-edge; when experience suggests an action that instantly proves to be correct. Trained byeveryday situations, our minds follow an internal logical system that recommends a likelysolution. People act analogically. What if the behaviour of digital lighting technology re-sponded to our analogue way of thinking?

Page 2:AREA unfolds its magic at the swipe of ahand: illuminated areas may be activatedand deactivated without the need for di-rect contact. The desired width of the illumi-nated area may be specified simply by theposition of the user’s hands. Sensors instant-ly detect the user’s movements and acti-vate the corresponding LEDs immediately– a convenient and highly energy-efficientmethod. By intuitively ‘grabbing’ and ‘pull-ing’ the light, the user may drag it from oneside of the lamp to the other. Originally in-tended as a modular under-cabinet lamp,AREA may also be used for a much broaderrange of applications: there’s virtually nolimit to your imagination.

At a length of 60 centimetreseach, the individual modules may easily beinterconnected to create a total length upto 3 meters, making them highly adaptableto almost any given conditions. AREA blendsin with its surroundings nearly invisibly, but itbecomes a brilliant eye-catcher when put touse.
